Seminole State student honored as 2017 Newman Civic Fellow

Seminole State student Caleb Hylton has been selected as a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow.
Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced Hylton as one of 273 students who will make up the organization’s 2017 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.
Caleb Hylton is well known around the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus for his hard work as President of the Seminole State Student Government Association (SGA), representing over 13,000 students. He not only inspires students on campus, but he is a passionate advocate on social issues and continually strives to make a positive impact on the community. Caleb is also an active member of the Honors College.
“In his role as SGA president, Caleb has been an advocate for increasing awareness and implementing several initiatives including a college-wide recycling program,” says Dr. E. Ann McGee, president of Seminole State College. “Caleb is admired by his peers, is an exceptional leader and is dedicated to making a difference in our community.”
Caleb has made a positive impact in the community through his involvement in the Seminole State Volunteers Program where he works with a group of like-minded students who coordinate service projects for the entire college. This leadership role has allowed him to reach more of his fellow students and make them aware of different issues that are affecting the community.
“Being chosen as a Newman Civic Fellow is a great honor for me,” says Hylton. “But an honor just as great is being able to continue to serve our students as their SGA President for the upcoming year. I'm extremely grateful for both of these opportunities to push myself even further as my potential becomes reality.”
As a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow, Hylton will be a part of the first cohort to benefit from a completely re-designed fellowship. The Newman Civic Fellowship, named for Campus Compact co-founder Frank Newman, is a one-year experience emphasizing personal, professional, and civic growth. Through the fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with access to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
“The cultivation of community-committed leaders has never been more crucial,” said Campus Compact president Andrew Seligsohn. “We rebuilt the Newman Civic Fellowship experience because our country needs more people who know how to bring communities together for positive change. We are thrilled to welcome this group of 273 exemplary students as the first cohort to participate in this new model.”
