Chapter Five - Academic Services' Faculty Resources
Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL) Resources
The FCTL (Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning) will host a variety of opportunities to learn more and connect with colleagues. Be on the lookout for weekly newsletters to find a listing of book clubs, service opportunities, and workshops. Pay special attention to the Adjunct Academy and Summer Heat sessions. These are paid learning opportunities specifically designed for our VITAL Adjunct faculty members.
Sign up for Adjunct Academy sessions through the Sign Me Up links in the Weekly FCTL Newsletters. You will find 3 sessions each Fall and 3 more each Spring. These sessions highlight current, applicable workshop topics that are relevant to teaching in Higher Education. Seats are limited and they fill up fast, so register early!
This 2-day conference at the end of Spring Term is an opportunity for Full-time and Adjunct faculty to celebrate another successful year and to dig deeply into a cutting-edge topic in educational pedagogy. Expect to find timely authors and speakers brought in from around the country for this great training opportunity.
Adjuncts are a vibrant and vital part of the Seminole State community. Our adjuncts are innovative, active, and appreciated. Through the generosity of the Seminole State Foundation, adjunct faculty are recognized each year for their outstanding work.
Adjuncts can use “Sign Me Up” appointments to register for events like Adjunct Academy and Summer Heat. Especially for events with limited capacity, it is helpful to register early. Sign Me Up appointments can be set up to migrate to most digital calendars (ex: Outlook), so it is a very helpful way to organize your registrations.
More than 23,000 online learning resources, including courses and certificate programs, are available to employees online through Skillsoft Percipio, in addition to required courses. These resources are FREE to all Seminole State employees.
eLearning Resources
The eLearning Department (previously the Distance Learning Department) is located in room V–103 (building V) on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus. Information about distance learning at Seminole State may be found on the web site. The Distance Learning Department is responsible for coordinating distance learning activities and for providing instruction for faculty in the use of software and hardware to support instruction. Staff assist faculty with the development of the course materials, as well as their course Web sites (407.708.2424).
Distance Learning Modes
Faculty interested in distance learning modes of instructional delivery and/or online course enhancements for their campus courses are encouraged to contact the eLearning office for further information. Currently, Seminole State has online courses and hybrid distance learning/campus delivery mode courses. Faculty who now instruct in these modes are available to mentor others in instructional delivery.
Canvas
Canvas is the College’s learning management system and is the standard tool used at Seminole State currently for online course delivery and Web enhancement. Many faculty have included components of Canvas, like bulletin boards and chat rooms, as part of their classroom instruction. Group and individual instruction in the use of Canvas is provided by the Distance Learning Staff. Contact the eLearning Office to obtain information about online course delivery, Canvas training, individual consultation and workshop scheduling/registration.
Other eLearning Services
Many staff in the eLearning Department are available to assist faculty with:
- Individual or group training in instructional technology tools and applications
- Course web site design and development
- Preparing and/or transitioning instructional material for online delivery.
- Researching available courses for distance learning delivery.
- Obtaining preview materials of distance learning courses or course material from publisher, producer, or other institutions.

Library Resources
Students, faculty, staff and Seminole County residents may use the Seminole State’s Libraries, located in the center of the Sanford/Lake Mary campus in the Partnership Building, at Oviedo in OVE100, and at Altamonte in ALT123. Basic information of interest to faculty is provided here. Additional services, procedures and hours of operation are listed on the Library Website. The Seminole State library card (College ID card) may be used on location at all Florida community/state colleges and universities to borrow library materials. A statewide courier service returns materials to the lending libraries regardless of where they are returned.
All borrowers must present a Seminole State Library Card (ID card), obtainable from the Library or Student Services area (for campus locations), when borrowing materials from the library. Faculty is urged to return materials promptly when they are not actively using them. The library website outlines details of the loan periods for various types of library materials. Circulation Services staff can provide further information. We ask that everyone who borrows materials honors the due date.
Instructors may place library or personal materials on reserve for student use at the Sanford/Lake Mary, Lee Campus at Oviedo, and Altamonte library circulation desks. Reserve periods and conditions are set by the instructor. Circulation Services staff will provide further information. Visit the Library Services webpage for additional faculty library resources.
Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provide Seminole State students with free tutoring for a range of subject areas, including math, writing, sciences, accounting, and more. The ASC staff can also help students develop their time management, notetaking, and study skills. Additionally, ASC locations offer computer access and study spaces.
Tutoring is available on a drop-in basis, so no appointment is necessary. ASC services are available on the Sanford/Lake Mary campus, Altamonte Springs campus, the Lee Campus at Oviedo, and online.
